about

As I decongest from the lethal man flu, the national campus radio award winning Bike Bits with Karly Coleman looked at how we can decongest Edmonton.

From the polarising optics around bike lanes that have led to the Globe and Mail giving Edmonton the uneviable title of "largest Canadian city without a single dedicated bike path downtown" [1] and their recent removal, the snail-pace rollout of the cycle tracks on 102 & 83 Ave and the narrowing of the High Level Bridge [2 & 3], we find reason for optimism that we could see the 18% reduction in congestion that results from just 1% of people moving to cycling [4] from news that Stantec is working with the city on a plan for a downtown bike grid to be put to council in September [5]. This follows recent data releases showing that cycling in Calgary has doubled [6], largely believed to be attrributable to their bike network. The numbers for the impacted areas are even more impressive.

We also ask if Edmonton can earn a cycling network, as a BBC article correlates GDP to walkability [7]. And wonder what a future of autonomous vehicles could mean for our congested streets [4].
