When we asked our panel of urbanists if they would use a Bike Share in Edmonton, the answers were unexpected: Yes, because they'd prefer not to lock their expensive bike up downtown; yes, because it will fit in with their multi-modal lifestyle; no, because they have too many bikes, although said with a hint of sarcasm.
The panel consisted of Isabell Hubert from Paths for People, Tim Querengesser an award winning journalist and bike fan, and Kieran Ryan the co-founder of the locally owned Pogo car share, and moderated by CJSR's bicycle traffic reporter Karly Coleman and Peter Chapman.
We discussed what a bike share is, the different systems used, from dock-based to dock-less and how perhaps the ideology around them has transitioned from one of shared ownership communism to democratic accessibility to all, as we mentioned how Uber had entered the fray.
Then we talked about some of the lessons the panel had learnt from some fact-finding trips they'd been on. Where bike shares are said to have failed, but how perhaps the failing is our understanding of success. Whether e-bikes (pedelecs) could be a further boon to bike shares.
And in the final segment we talked about whether Edmonton would ever get a bike share. The consensus was that we could see one within two years! What role does the City have in getting one in place (Councillor Aaron Paquette (ward 4) made a motion to have city investigate the feasibility, that report comes back to council in August). And if you want to encourage the arrival of a bike share, start talking about it. And of course, when it does come, use it, whatever your reason.
